The sense of vindication was palpable in her shriek of victory as she hit the winner against the teenaged American Caty McNally in the morning match on Court Everybody wants to do well.
It's normal to be nervous. I was actually excited about it because I'd been practicing well and losing. I thought, I'm not practicing well now so After a minute delay, she started to claw her way back into contention. Her serve, too, fizzed and crackled.
But Watson gradually began to assert herself, clawing back a break and imposing her will. She broke back, then broke again, her tennis at times — as in a lovely back-hand pass down the line that wrong-footed her opponent entirely — as good as it has ever been here.
McNally, however, was not easily cowed. And showed her potential by biting back to take the first set to a tie break. In the past this might have been the point where we witnessed Watson cracking. But here, she eased away, eradicating her early errors to dominate the shoot-out.
Her victory means she will play the Estonian Anett Kontaveit on Wednesday. She is a fighter, and this was a fighting performance. She faced down two set points in the first set and then had the run of the place in the second. McNally, just 17, looked to have a bit about her, some nice touches.
Both players would have to serve a hell of a lot better to get anywhere, though. For McNally, that will be on another day, but for Heather Watson, an encouraging start to the Championships and she will take her place in the first round draw.
Right then Caty. What have you got? Plays a great point first up. Moving Watson around expertly. Weak second serve from Watson and McNally helps herself. Watson steadies the shop with a quality crosscourt backhand, her best shot this match.
But good groundstrokes from McNally, and it's Slightly better second serve this time, Watson in control of the point and wins it with a lob. Saves the next bp as well and it is deuce.
Watson serves. Match point for Heather. Bravely, McNally comes to the net and tucks away a classy volley. Watson aces the next one though and there's another match point. Watson hits into the net. McNally wins the next point as well and she has a break point at A Wild ball from Heather, McNally latches onto it but wide.
Unreturned serve now gives Watson here third match point But McNally volleys well to bring it back to deuce. Watson fourth match point though now, and the young American slaps a running forehand into the net.
That's it, game set and match to Heather Watson, she raises her arms aloft and smiles happily. She holds to But Watson now serves for the match. Perhaps freed up by the parlous match situation, McNally swings hard and fierce for a forehand winner. Now a double fault from Watson.
Steady, Heather! And steady she does: she has nipped that recovery in the bud to hold her serve and it's all coming up Milhouse for Heather Watson right now. Heather Watson is going to be in the second round of Wimbledon here, unless the young American can produce a minor miracle, or Watson completely loses the plot.
And she has done that with some authority. Game Heather. Excellent forehand though from the Cincinnati Kid though to keep her in it. As does an overhead that just kisses the line. She's battled back hard. Watson returns long. Impressive from McNally as she gets her forehand working again and she has held from Game effort.
Caty McNally looking a bit like, well, like a teenager at the moment. Not quite going for her and the frustration is starting to show a touch. Tie break in the first set Watson wins the first point with a solid first serve.
Neither of this pair really able to serve with any confidence and McNally makes her 18th unforced error for Watson with an error of her own.

And soon , three set points, and fittingly an error on the forehand from McNally opens the door. Heather Watson wins the first set. She produces a glorious passing shot.
