Tobacco, his broadcasting career and the charity for which he will be most remembered, as the founder of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.
Much of the film is devoted to Buoniconti's relationship with his son, Marc, who became a quadriplegic as a result of a football injury, and, in a more recent but equally sad development, his own physical and cognitive decline as a result of doctors believe to be chronic traumatic encephalopathy resulting from trauma suffered during his football career.
The film is unsparing in its depiction of Buoniconti's current state, including several instances in which he is unable to complete sentences because of his cognitive decline, and his reduced mobility.
That being said, the film represents, in the words of Buoniconti's longtime friend, "60 Minutes" anchor Steve Kroft, a life of triumph, not tragedy.
